Does This Work?

Good question! The best way to find out is to give it a try. It's not like you paying money to try. Anyway, below is a screenshot of my progress after 1 week of playing Clash of Clans (I didn't have any free gems at that point):

Alternative methods (time consuming) to get free gems in Clash of Clans

Some may find the below methods time consuming, in other words, you have to be patient ;)

It is possible to complete the achievements in CoC. Finishing every offered achievement in Clash of Clans gives a total of 6000+ gems. The achievement which gives you the most gems is a part of "Sweet Victory" achievement - you will get 450 free gems once your trophies level is 1250.

Additionally, you may also take a moment clearing the rubbles in the game. Occasionally it offers you one or three free gems at a time. The good thing is that the wreckage keep re-appearing after a certain amount of time and you can use gems for revving your gold mine or elixir production. As a disadvantage - you have to wait for the debris to re-appear. Even so, you still get some free gems.
